Sam Robin Shelton Music
I am a musician, composer and teacher based in Sydenham, South East London,
teaching piano, guitar, trombone, composition, production, songwriting, theory and more!
I have been playing piano for 17 years and trombone for 13 years, during which I have been studying all aspects of music and getting involved in as many bands and projects as possible.
Whilst my main instruments are trombone (Grade 8 distinction) and piano/keyboards, I play and have had lessons in guitar, bass, ukelele, trumpet and drums/percussion.
I also teach music theory, composition and production.
I have a full Enhanced DBS certificate.
I am confident in teaching any musical genre.
I have played in many ensembles and big bands all over Europe, playing jazz, classical, musical theatre, pop, rock, blues, funk and ska.
“Sam is a really really wonderful teacher - so patient, so precise, so calm and responds brilliantly to any advice we might need and he has made such sound judgements on the progress of our boys' learning. But, probably more important than anything, he has engaged two young boys such that they love their instruments enough to pick them up naturally for a jam, not just when it’s practise time. This is the magic. Can’t reccomend Sam highly enough”
“Guitar Sam is a really supportive music teacher because he encourages you by showing you how you could improve. He is also really nice and kind. He prepared me really well for my exam and my mock score he gave me was just 1 point off my actual exam score. I really like him.”
“I like Guitar Sam because he teaches me songs I really like playing and he’s funny and explains things really kindly”
“Over the last year Sam has enabled me to grow in confidence with my piano playing. He has challenged me and encouraged me and has been very patient with me. I believe my playing has improved a lot under his guidance. Thank you Sam”
“My lessons are always enjoyable and very creative. Sam is always adaptable to specific things you want to look at from pieces to new types of scales and my lessons are always fun as I get to try out new jazz theory and pieces all the time.”
"Sam has been teaching my son, Tommy, to play trumpet and then drums for a while. It has been fantastic to have Sam, who can play various instruments. Sam is such a nice, patient teacher and is easy to talk to. He managed to build a good rapport quickly with Tommy.
Sam also adapted really well to Tommy's needs and made lessons enjoyable for my son. I would recommend him to any of my friends who want their child to learn from the best!"
"My son started guitar lessons with Sam when he was just 5 years old. We knew it would be a challenge for someone so young, but Sam has displayed a great deal of patience in supporting him from learning the first notes to recently being able to improvise. Sam's gentle and consistently encouraging approach to teaching has suited Albert very well and Sam has successfully tailored the tasks set to suit Albert’s ability and musical tastes, which has kept him interested. Sam’s performing talent in a number of instruments and musical genres serves to enrich his teaching."

“I like Sam because he always helps me if I get stuck and he chooses music that I like.”
Albert, aged 6
"Sam is a fun teacher and I enjoy a lot being taught by him. Although he is funny and makes jokes to make the lesson more interesting, at the same time he teaches me countless techniques, positions, notes, tips tricks and many more things."
Alma, aged 9
"Our Y4 daughter never before had a piano lesson until she met Sam. She absolutely loved her first lesson with him and was hooked to music lessons since. He also gave her online one to one lessons during the Covid isolation period. He was brilliant throughout. We are amazed at how much she has learnt in just one year with Sam. Most importantly we are delighted at how motivated she is to keep learning. For our child, piano lessons are synonymous with fun times. As parents we think there is no greater achievement for a teacher than making learning fun, therefore we can’t recommend Sam enough."

“Our son, James has been attending piano lessons with Sam for the last year and half. Both my husband and myself have been delighted at the progress he has made in such a short space of time.
Sam is a wonderfully patient, knowledgeable, dedicated and professional piano teacher, who is just as effective teaching online as he is face to face.
Our son can struggle with instructions and concentration at times and Sam never failed to read our son and know when to change tack or take a break. Sam’s dynamic, dedicated and supportive approach has seen our son pass two piano grades, but just as importantly Sam has fostered enthusiasm and a real passion for piano in James.
James always looked forward to his lesson with Sam and we feel very lucky to have had Sam as James’s Piano Teacher.”
I played trombone for 5 years for the Lincolnshire Music Service, touring Europe with LYCO, LYWO and LYSO, the last 3 years of which I was principal trombonist.
I was voted Young Music-Maker of 2017 by Lincolnshire Music Service and Lincolnshire County Council.
I have completed 3 years of jazz performance tuition at Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, during which I completed modules in small and large ensemble performance, composition and pedagogy, so I am confident in teaching people of all ages and abilities, one to one and in workshops.
I am currently trombonist in the ska/reggae band RudeSix.
I have plenty of experience performing, writing and recording many different styles of music, with many musicians.
